The Erik Bedard trade finally is official. The Mariners have obtained Bedard from the Orioles for a package of five players — outfielder Adam Jones, left-handed reliever George Sherrill and pitching prospects Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio.
This trade was just about done for a good few weeks. The key to this deal for the Orioles was getting Adam Jones in return. He's a potential star in CF, and look for the Orioles to build their franchise around him and RF Nick Markakis. Which also makes a point Rosenthal makes asinine... He says that the Cubs could trade their prized CF prospect Felix Pie to the Orioles in a package for second baseman Brian Roberts, but they just got somebody to fill that position in Jones. I think the Roberts to Cubs deal will get done, but Pie certainly won't be involved.
The Orioles are arguably the worst team in the AL right now(I'd argue they are), and this rebuilding process will take quite some time, especially in the AL East. I think this was a pretty good deal for them though. Bedard wasn't going to be around by the time the Orioles actually started competing.
As for the Mariners, they become a serious threat in the AL West. I still like the Los Angeles Orange County Just A Few Miles Away From Disneyland Angels of Anaheim in that division, but Felix Hernandez and Erik Bedard is a pretty damn good 1-2 punch, especially at a pitcher's park in Safeco Field.
