Memphis vs. South Florida (-12)
St. Petersburg, FL
Saturday, 4:30 PM Eastern
Game Time Weather Forecast: Sunny 70- 75 Degrees
An Old School Conference USA Matchup has the 6-6 Memphis Tigers up against the 7-5 South Florida Bulls. South Florida started the season 6-1 but finished 1-4, including losses to Cincinnati and West Virginia. The Bulls are looking to regain some national respect as they practically play a home game in St. Petersburg. Memphis is just thrilled to be going to a bowl after starting the season 0-3. I believe this game should be a lot closer than the spread shows. ( Hint Hint: take Memphis) Here's why:
Both defenses have been strong coming down the stretch. Memphis is only allowing 195 yards passing a game. South Florida held Donald Brown (UConn) to only 3.4 yards a carry and no touchdowns. They also held Pat White (West Virginia) to 140 yards passing, 2.7 yards per rush, and sacked him twice.
However, the Bulls Quarterback, Matt Grothe, is looking to continue a decent season after helping USF lead the Big East in total offense. Grothe(pictured top right) did throw 14 interceptions though. So, Memphis should be able to contain him.
Memphis is going to have to worry about special teams as they have blown leads due to kickoff returns and punt block returns for TD's. Memphis could actually be 8-4 right now if not for those miscues.
Look for Memphis to play their hearts out, only to fall just short on a special teams mistake or costly mid-game interception.
My Pick: South Florida
Against the Spread: Memphis (+12)
