A game that has it all? Well, it has it all as far as the sea goes. Though that may not be true either...the game was premised around Ecco jumping out of the water and a storm sucking all of his aqua buddies up and out of the bay. It's an environmental story for the ages...don't mock a storm when you're a sea creature, lest you be sucked out. This is the one occasion in life that it is not good to be sucked.
Ultimately it becomes known that aliens have taken all the sea creatures as they need to feed or some nonsense. It really doesn't matter as story isn't what this game is most known for. Simply put, this game was too difficult for its own good. When you die...and you would die, no doubt...you'd be having to do most of the high difficulty nonsense again. For a game that stars a talking dolphin, the difficulty was a shock to most.
The game allowed Ecco to ram his enemies as well as use his "song" as a weapon after having it upgraded. That's all well and good, I suppose, but the gameplay left a lot to be desired. The main qualm was that you had to surface for oxygen before a meter expired. Yes, Ecco's a dolphin...but geez, Mario's a plumber and you're not required to snake toilets in the Mushroom Kingdom. The bloody dolphins can talk...it's not like this is the Discovery Channel or something.
Anyways, Ecco the Dolphin is generally considered an iconic game and one that most everyone has played at some point. Ecco the Dolphin is currently available on the Wii Virtual Console and the XBox Live Arcade and apparently will be available in the upcoming Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for PS3 and Xbox 360.
