It appears we're starting to see the real Maria Sharapova on the tennis court. Just nine days after appearing in the Rogers Cup final, her first final since last April due to a shoulder injury that required surgery and a struggle to fully recover, Maria dominated Tsevatana Pironkova 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the US Open.
Maria looked like her old self, striking the ball better than she has since going down with the shoulder injury. It's just one win and against the 98th ranked player in the world, whereas Maria's seeded 29th in the tournament so she was the heavy favorite. Additionally, she could be running into the fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva after next round, who beat the Thigh Goddess without much trouble in the aforementioned Rogers Cup final.
However, we all know when Maria's right she's a top-five player in the world, and it's appearing she's getting there. Former tennis great and current ESPN analyst Pam Shriver was doubting Maria's chances in this tournament on SportsCenter a couple days ago, but said tonight after witnessing this match in person, "Maria Sharapova is back." We sure hope so. Regardless, the thigh is looking as good as ever.
