Pirates latest to do something stupid

Posted by FlyAtTheThigh | 3/30/2010 03:24:00 PM | ,

Well, more stupid than actually attempting to play the 2010 baseball season. It appears that Pittsburgh is electing to hit the pitcher 8th this year. Nevermind the fact that this bit of LaRussian ingenuity does absolutely nothing to provide more offense, but the Pirates are electing to hit one Ronny Cedeno 9th.

Ronny Cedeno's career line:

.240/.280/.346

Ronny Cedeno should hit eleventh. He certainly be part of any master plan to get more runners on base or to have two lead-off hitters or whatever nonsense it is that managers come up with when they elect to hit the pitcher 8th.

Of course, this post doesn't bother to delve into the insanity that is the fact that Ronny Cedeno is a starting shortstop on a Major league team, even if that team is the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Finally: A Sharapova's Thigh Facebook Fan Page

Posted by Matt Clapp | 3/25/2010 04:02:00 PM |

We've had a Facebook group for awhile, but the group doesn't allow you to do as much cool stuff as the fan pages do. Now I can post our links on there and you'll see them on your Facebook news feed. I named it "The Thigh", because Facebook has this officialness crap with celebrities and whatnot, which wouldn't allow me to name it "Sharapova's Thigh" without contacting them explaining why my name should be allowed. Additionally, we most all call it "The Thigh" anyway, right?

Awards/Leaderboard: Led AL In Wins In 1991(20).

Top 10 In AL Wins 3 Times(83, 86, 91).

Led AL In Fewest Walks/9 IP In 1984(1.469).

Top 10 In League Fewest Walks Per 9 Innings Pitched 9 Times (81, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 91, 92, 94).

Top 10 In League Strikeouts/Walks 4 Times (81, 84, 87, 94).

Fun Facts: Bill Gullickson was the second overall selection by the Montreal Expos in the 1977 draft. He would make his major league debut for the Expos in 1979 at the age of 20, and threw just one inning that year. However, that gave him rookie eligibility for the 1980 season, and he went 10-5 with a 3.00 ERA, finishing second in National League Rookie of the Year voting. Also that season, he struck out 18 batters in a game, setting a record for most strikeouts in a game by a rookie pitcher. Kerry Wood would break that record in 1998, when he struck out 20 batters in a game as a rookie.

In 1988, Gullickson went over to Japan to play for the Yomiuri Giants. He would stay there through 1989, and compile a 21-14 record. He was thought very highly of by the Japanese people. They were especially impressed by his ability to play through type 1 Diabetes, and even named an award in his honor called The "Gullickson Award". The award was named by the Japan Diabetes Mellitus Society and given to a person dealing with diabetes that does great things in society.

Not only did the Japanese respect Gullickson, but he very much respected them as well. He became great friends with Japanese pitcher Masumi Kuwata. He thought so highly of Kuwata, that he gave his son Craig the middle name of Kuwata. Kuwata actually made it to the majors in 2007, being a 39-year-old rookie on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gullickson has children that are also very impressive athletes. One of his daughters, Carly, is a profesional tennis player. Another daughter, Cassie, does track and field for Notre Dame. And the aforementioned Craig Gullickson received a scholarship offer to play baseball from Clemson.

My Take: Gullickson's one of the more underrated pitchers over the last 30 years in my opinion. Having a 3.93 ERA over 2,560 innings pitched, and putting up double-digit wins in 11 different seasons is quite impressive.

Certainly a part of the reason he's not quite as talked about as other pitchers of that era is because he wasn't flashy. He only struck out over 130 batters in a season once, gave up more hits(2,659) than innings pitched over his career, and gave up at least 20 homers in a season ten times. However, he was successful because he walked just 2.2 batters per nine innings pitched over his career. His efficiency was what also allowed him to make over 30 starts eight times, and throw over 200 innings seven times.

Gullickson may have never been an All-Star, but he had a much better career than many of the pitchers that did appear in an All-Star Game. Additionally, being "Random Retro'd" on the Thigh is a pretty big deal, right?

Friend of the Thigh and new Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim television play-by-play announcer, Victor Rojas, is the founder of a new social network dedicated to sports fans called "Yakcy". The site launched last week and is sure to be a hit fast, especially with Rojas' mind behind it. Aside from getting the Angels' play-by-play gig, here's what Rojas has also done in the sports media world:

Rojas, most recently a television personality on MLB Network, has spent the last 9 years in the baseball broadcasting industry as a play-by-play announcer, analyst and television host. Prior to deciding on a broadcasting career, Rojas worked in marketing and communications in minor league baseball, Arena Football, National Hockey League and Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami. Rojas also has experience in the Internet market place, holding an executive position with GolfSpan.com (which is now part of GolfLink.com).

Now to summarize what Yakcy is.... it's simply a place to talk sports with other diehard sports fans, but with some very knowledgeable and entertaining ones at that. You click on a specific game/event listed on there, and interact with other fans about those games/events. Fans of social network sites like Facebook and Twitter should particularly enjoy it, and you can even use your Facebook or Twitter log-in information for the site.

So sign up, interact with some sports fans, and tell them the Thigh sent you.

We informed you in November of Erin McNaught's gruesome motorcyle accident which severed off part of her right index finger. Thankfully, the former Thigh of the Week had the finger reattached, and she is back to showing off her beautiful self. For proof, here's pictures of the Australian in a bikini at a L'Oreal fashion festival in Melbourne...

Mila Kunis... I'd have much more respect for her if she weren't with Macaulay Culkin. However, there's no doubting she's easy on the eyes and has a superb thigh. For the April 2010 issue of GQ, she shows it off for us...

Shockingly, Jose Canseco Continues To Shock Me

Posted by Matt Clapp | 3/23/2010 12:50:00 PM | , , ,

Up until the last month or so, I really didn't think it was possible for anything Jose Canseco says to surprise me. Then came along his Twitter account and absolute craziness.

For example, here's a Canseco tweet from an hour ago(WARNING: it's very R-rated)...

Wow. At the same time, his honesty has provided us with some very useful information in recent years, especially with steroids in baseball. He broke this news for us today:

Interesting guy.
