September 2012 | Sharapova's Thigh

Yesterday we showed you the amazing behind-the-back 30-yard touchdown pass from a Purdue intramural game, and now, we bring you video of another awesome "trick" football pass. And this one actually took place during a really important situation of a high school game.

Before you watch the video, read Prep Rally's Cameron Smith explanation of the play, and what led up to it:

The action unfolded in Washington State, where Tumwater (Wash.) High was facing off against highly-ranked Olympia (Wash.) Capital High. In a tight game, Tumwater quarterback Jayden Croft connected with tight end Jamie Bryant on a 4-yard touchdown grab with just under 3:00 remaining. The grab brought Tumwater within two-points at 21-19, setting up a two-point conversion to tie the game or, in all likelihood, seal a loss.

The resulting play was one of the gutsiest, most bizarre calls anyone could imagine. Tumwater coach Sid Otton called for a trick play on which Croft would toss up the ball with his back to goal, putting it in play on the goal line and hoping that the 6-foot-5 Bryant, a Washington commit, would get up to catch it.

And here's video of the play:

Deadspin's Barry Petchesky summarized the play well: "Quarterback Throws The Ball Like A Wedding Bouquet, And Holy Crap It Works."

Soooooo weird to see this.

Earlier, I showed you an unbelievable home run-robbing catch that the Pirates' Travis Snider made against the Mets on Thursday at Citi Field.

But, something even more eye-opening than that took place at Citi Field on Thursday: KEITH HERNANDEZ SHAVED HIS MUSTACHE. I repeat: KEITH HERNANDEZ SHAVED HIS MUSTACHE.

Our buddy Mark Townsend (give him a Twitter follow) explains more on Yahoo's Big League Stew:

The ceremonial shaving took place outside the Jackie Robinson Rotunda at Citi Field and was attended by hundreds according to Newsday. And, as you'd expect, the event was motivated by a terrific cause as Hernandez, the Mets, and the folks at Schick Hydro — who provided the razor and barber — donated $10,000 to the Jacquelyn Hernandez Adult Day Health Center in Brooklyn, which aids Alzheimer's patients and is named for Hernandez's mother.

Video of the shaving:

It just feels wrong for Keith Hernandez to ever shave his mustache (which I think is one of the greatest mustaches of all-time), but it was certainly for a terrific cause.

Oh, and in case you need some more craziness from the day at Citi Field: R.A. Dickey became the first knuckleballer to win 20 games since Phil Niekro did in 1980.

Anyway, we leave you with this:

Sure it's an intramurals game (obligatory link to Dan Hawkins' rant), but still a pretty damn amazing behind-the-back throw from Corey Webster (punter on the Purdue Boilermarkers' football team):

UPDATE: @maedwilson tells me on Twitter, "FWIW I am pretty sure it was actually the punter's roommate", and I see on the Athlon Sports comments that somebody said the same. Whatever the case, awesome throw, from somebody that plays intramural football at Purdue.

Today, adidas released an outstanding commercial (which begins airing next week) as part of their "The Return of D-Rose" campaign.

Here's more about the commercial, titled 'Wake up', from adidas:

“Wake-Up” captures the time-stopping shock and disbelief felt by fans across Chicago as their favorite son’s season came to an end. Then, inspired by Derrick’s intense, focused workouts and determination, and coupled with gritty, authentic sounds from the Windy City, fans wake up and come back to life. The spot ends with Derrick walking through the player’s tunnel at a frenzied Chicago Bulls home game at the United Center to build anticipation and excitement for his return.

The spot showcases that every step Rose takes toward recovery isn’t just bringing him back, it’s bringing all fans back.

The commercial was shot in multiple Chicago locations including Lake Street Bridge and South Side neighborhoods and parks. Derrick Rose footage and audio used was captured during “The Return of D Rose” documentary series filming at the Berto Center. The spot features the in-game call from TNT’s Kevin Harlan and cameos by iconic Chicago sports anchor Dan Roan and Derrick’s brother Reggie Rose.

“Wake Up” continues “The Return of D Rose” conversation fans can joined at the adidas Basketball Facebook Page, and on Twitter with #TheReturn @adidasHoops. The D Rose 3 basketball shoe is available now for presale at and officially launches with the D Rose signature collection on October 4.

And here's the commercial:

As a Bulls fan, I felt exactly like everybody else in the commercial when D-Rose went down with the injury. Just a tremendously done commercial. I especially like that it was shot in multiple Chicago locations. Everything about felt very authentic.

You may remember Trent Guy from his days as a University of Louisville football player. Those are days that he probably doesn't like to remember, because during that time (2008 to be exact), he was shot in the back at a club.

Or you may remember him from spending training camps with the Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers. Again, days he probably doesn't like to remember, because he was unable to make the team any of those times.

Well, now he's playing in the CFL for the Montreal Alouettes, and on Sunday, had a ridiculously awesome play that would be impossible to pull of in the NFL. And I'm not saying that it would be impossible due to the talent level of the NFL, but rather because the field is not long enough. As Deadspin's Barry Petchesky points out, "The CFL field is 110 yards instead of the NFL's 100. And the end zones are each 20 yards deep, instead of 10."

So, yeah, watch Guy return a missed field goal 129 freaking yards for a touchdown in the Alouettes' 31-10 victory over the Toronto Argonauts:

During a recent soccer club match in Isafan, Iran, some asshole decided to throw a grenade on the pitch. Yes, a grenade.

Well, one of the soccer players had no idea that an object he found on the pitch was said grenade, and casually picked it up and tossed it off the field. Then, boom, explosion (but thankfully away from anybody... barely):

The match was called off after that (duh), and police are investigating the case.

Today, Adidas released their third episode ('Focus') of their outstanding video documentary series, 'The Return of D-Rose', which focuses on Derrick Rose's rehab from a torn ACL.

Here's video of the episode, and below that is the transcript of the episode:

Derrick Rose:

I started playing basketball ever since probably, what? Four, three or four and ever since then I just like, always loved the game.

When I was growing up my biggest thing was just getting to the league. I wasn't thinking about shoe deals, or a gym shoe, or anything. I really saw what hard work can do for someone's life.

My biggest fight right now, I would have to say, is just stayin' focused. Being patient because I'm impatient. If you think about it I never stop this is the only time in my life where I actually stopped playing basketball. Even in high school I was always going.

Then thinking I was going to be able to play in the Olympics this year, it just killed my dreams.

This injury gives me time to appreciate the people that's around me. Be grateful for what I have. Just live life.

I'm 23 but I've been in the league since I was 19 so just doing what you suppose to do, that's all you have to do.

Hard work pays off and I seen it actually pay off the year that I won MVP. I worked extremely hard so I know that all this stuff is going to pay off one day.

It's challenging, I'm just trying not to stop.

Fred Tedeschi, head athletic trainer:

Derrick's progress to date, and it's excellent progress, has been driven by his focus on trying to get back. You know, it's not so much necessarily his body chemistry that's driving what's going on I think it's his mind and his, his, passion to get better.

Just last week, I tweeted, "If there's a worse town in Colorado than Greeley, I haven't been to it." And I say that as somebody that lives in Colorado, and has for the last 15+ years now.

While in most towns you might notice a landmark or something other than an official town sign to make you realize you've arrived in a town, you know you're in Greeley when it smells like complete shit. I mean, it's bad. My buddy Brandon grew up in Greeley, and as he always says, "You get used to the smell, but that certainly doesn't make it any better."

Well, while Greeley is generally terrible, they do have something going on that's pretty neat: a Peyton Manning corn maze (picture via @CodyCrouch).

Week 1 Picks

Indianapolis Colts at Chicago Bears (-10)

Andrew Luck makes his much anticipated debut at Soldier Field against the Bears, a team that looks more explosive on offense than, well, ever before. While I think Luck will have a terrific career, rarely does a quarterback come right in and dominate. It's going to take some time, and then factor in that he's not exactly loaded with help around him on offense.

Oh, and under Lovie Smith, the Bears have dominated rookie quarterbacks, AND they've been particularly tough on defense in season-openers over the last few years (just ask the 2011 Atlanta Falcons).

Lastly, it's going to be extremely difficult for the Colts to stop a Bears offense that added Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and Michael Bush over the offseason. The Colts are now in a 3-4 defense under new head coach Chuck Pagano, with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis playing the outside linebacker spots. It will be interesting to see how they rush without their hand in the ground, and how they drop back into coverage when need be. If they want to beat the Bears, they're likely going to need Freeney and Mathis to wreak havoc on a Bears offensive line that is still very questionable in pass protection (I'm specifically looking at you, left tackle J'Marcus Webb).

The Pick: Bears 28, Colts 17

Philadelphia Eagles (-10) at Cleveland Browns

As you can see above in my season picks, I do NOT like the Browns this year. And I tried as hard as I could to give them at least 2 or 3 wins... I just didn't see it anywhere. Seeing how the offense looked under rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden after a game or two may change my opinion on them, but right now, they look very bad.

And the Eagles, top to bottom, just may be the most loaded roster in the NFL. There's just too much talent here for the Browns to handle.

The Pick: Eagles 28, Browns 13

Buffalo Bills at New York Jets (-3)

It's been well-documented just how god awful the Jets' offense looked in the preseason, and there's nothing about that roster which makes me feel like they're going to improve much on the offensive end. You know everything about the quarterback situation if you've had ESPN on for 5 minutes, Shonn Greene is very blah at the running back position, there's not any game-changers at wide receiver, etc.

And you can see above that I'm very high on the Bills this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they have the best defensive line in the entire league after the addition of Mario Williams, and I see them causing lots of trouble for whichever crappy Jets quarterback is back there.

The Pick: Bills 20, Jets 13

Washington Redskins at New Orleans Saints (-8)

Like Andrew Luck, I think that Robert Griffin III will be a great player in this league, but I don't see him doing well in the opener, especially against a pissed off Saints team at the SuperDome. And like Luck, RG3 doesn't have much help offensively.

Unless the Redskins can bring pressure constantly from Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan, Drew Brees will be too good for the Redskins' offense to keep up.

The Pick: Saints 34, Redskins 17

New England Patriots (-6) at Tennessee Titans

I think that this year's Patriots offense will be even better than last year's. Josh McDaniels is finally back where he belongs, and he got his buddy that he knows how to use perfectly, Brandon Lloyd, to join the Patriots' already loaded group of receivers (I'm counting the tight ends). There's been reports all camp that Aaron Hernandez may even have a bigger year than Rob Gronkowski at tight end, which seems damn near impossible with how ridiculous Gronk was last year.

It's just going to be tough for the Titans to stop that offense. Jake Locker played very well in his short stint last season, and I fully expect the pre-2011 Chris Johnson to show up. I like him to lead the league in rushing yards even. But, he'll probably need to run for about 18+0 if the Titans want to win this game.

The Pick: Patriots 34, Titans 24

Jacksonville Jaguars at Minnesota Vikings (-3.5)

Well, somebody has to win.

The Pick: Vikings 17, Jaguars 14

Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans (-13)

The biggest mismatch of the day. I think that this is the year that the Texans put it all together, and the Dolphins may be the least talented team in the NFL. In the NFL, I hate big point spreads, but I'll honestly be surprised if the Texans don't cover that line.

The Pick: Texans, 35, Dolphins 10

St. Louis Rams at Detroit Lions (-9)

I love the move to bring in Jeff Fisher, and the Rams have loaded up on draft picks, which is the way to go when looking to build sustained success. But they're still a year or two away.

The Lions are ready to win now, and if they want to keep up with the Packers and Bears in the NFC North, can't afford to lose to the Rams at home.

The Pick: Lions 31, Rams 20

Atlanta Falcons (-3) at Kansas City Chiefs

I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being the most entertaining game of week 1. The Falcons feature an explosive offense that could be even better this year if Julio Jones takes the jump I expect him to.

But I don't think that nearly enough people are talking about the Chiefs. They've added Peyton Hillis to a running back group that already included Jamaal Charles, and get tight end Tony Moeaki returning from injury after missing all of 2010. I also think that their defense could surprise.

At home, I like the Chiefs.

The Pick: Chiefs 24, Falcons 21

San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers (-5.5)

The 49ers have what is the best defense in the NFL in my opinion. However, if you give Aaron Rodgers time to throw, he'll pick you apart, regardless of how good your linebackers and defensive backs are. The 49ers' front-7 is going to have to be in Rodgers' face all game, or else he's going to throw for his usual 300 yards and 2-4 touchdowns.

And I'm still just not sold enough on Alex Smith to predict the 49ers in this one.

The Pick: Packers 27, 49ers 17

Carolina Panthers (-3) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I have the Panthers at 7-9, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were a couple games better, or a couple games worse, either. Cam Newton will only improve, and the offense as a whole can be very good if Steve Smith, Jonathan Stewart, and DeAngelo Williams can stay healthy. Defensively, that's where the question marks really are, but rookie middle linebacker Luke Kuechly is going to be a stud, and he alone could make the defense better.

But, that's still a young team, and even though I'm not high on the Bucs, I'll take them at home in a close game that is full of some head-shaking plays.

The Pick: Buccaneers 21, Panthers 17

Seattle Seahawks (-3) at Arizona Cardinals

The Seahawks are definitely a sleeper team this year after watching Russell Wilson look outstanding in the preseason. I have concerns about his 5'11" height, but think he'll at least have a solid season for a rookie and keep the Seahawks in most games. And it looks like he'll have Marshawn Lynch to hand the ball off to against the Cardinals.

And I think the Seahawks' defense (or really, any defense) is going to be too much for John Skelton and the Cardinals' offense.

The Pick: Seahawks 21, Cardinals 13

Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos (-3)

Peyton Manning's debut right here in the town of Thigh headquarters. The Steelers are looking for revenge after the Broncos knocked them off here in the first round of the playoffs last year, but have some question marks offensively right now. Rashard Mendenhall is likely out until October, Mike Wallace held out until the last couple of weeks, the offensive line is full of question marks, etc. Additionally, safety Ryan Clark (who can't play in Colorado due to the altitude) will not be playing.

The Steelers will get much better as the year goes along, but right now, I'll take the Broncos in a rocking Mile High for Peyton's debut.

The Pick: Broncos 24, Steelers 21

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-7.5)

Don't see the Ravens losing to Andy Dalton and the Bengals' offense at home on Monday night to start the season.

The Pick: Ravens 20, Bengals 13

San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders (-1)

Darren McFadden may be the most talented running back in the NFL and I think he carries the Raiders home against the Chargers in a game that should go down to the wire.

The Pick: Raiders 28, Chargers 24
