This is the best punt return you'll see today

Posted by Matt Clapp | 10/31/2012 04:42:00 PM | ,

And the worst tackling you'll see today, unless for some reason you're watching tape of the 2012 New Orleans Saints.

Watch Andrew Spencer of Illinois' Lake Community return a punt 84 yards for a touchdown in the Illinois Class 6A high school playoffs:

With the opening night for the 2012-13 NBA season taking place, Kia is showing off an awesome new commercial featuring Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin.

In the commercial, Griffin uses his Kia Optima to travel back to 1995 to meet with his young self, and offer some advice: "Practice your free throws. A lot."

Griffin's of course making fun of himself, as he shot an awful 52% from the free throw line last year.

After playing for the Boston Celtics in the last five NBA seasons, 10-time All-Star Ray Allen rejected a two-year, $12-million offer from the team in the offseason, and instead chose to go to the 'dark side', signing a three-year deal with the Miami Heat. And wouldn't you know it, the Celtics and Heat are meeting to open the NBA season tonight in Miami (technically the Washington Wizards/Cleveland Cavaliers game was first, but nobody cares).

Well, when Allen entered the game off the bench in a sixth-man role, he first went over to the Boston bench to say 'what's up' to his old pals. And Kevin Garnett wasn't having any of that.

Watch KG give Allen the cold shoulder:

Listen, if my Colorado State Rams can beat you in college football, you are really, really, really, REALLY bad. I mean REALLY FREAKING bad.

Welp, that indeed happened to the Colorado Buffaloes, as the Rams beat them 22-17 in the season-opener (for the Rams' only win of the season to this point).

Today, CU is playing in Eugene against the No. 4 Oregon Ducks, and it's going exactly as expected. As I write this, Oregon leads 70-14 in the fourth quarter, and it would probably be even more of a slaughtering if the Ducks were actually trying in the second half. At halftime, the score was 56-0.

And one of those first-half touchdowns came on this ridiculous punt return from Oregon star De'Anthony Thomas:

Thomas also has five carries for 97 yards. That's 19.4 yards per carry. Not bad.
But seriously, how long until the Pac-12 tells CU to take a hike?

LeBron's already the best basketball player on the planet, and the scary thing is that he can still be much, much better.

Just an insane talent with a size/athleticism combo we've never seen in the NBA. And it seems that many times, he forgets that; he forgets his strengths. He seems so intent on showing everybody he can hit the fadeaway J to close out a game a la MJ, when he could simply drive to the basket and at least draw a foul, if not make the shot for two points.

When LeBron drives to the rim, you're rarely going to stop him. In most instances, you might as well just get out of the way like the Hornets did on that dunk.

You’ve heard the saying “it’s raining cats and dogs.” It’s supposed to signify a heavy rainfall. But what does it mean when it starts raining sharks?

That’s exactly what happened Monday at San Juan Hills Golf Club, when a 2-foot-long shark was spotted thrashing about on the 12th tee box.

(You read that right. A live shark was found at the golf course.)

The shark was discovered around 4 p.m. by an on-duty course marshal, who immediately called the clubhouse to report the displaced fish.

“It was just wriggling around,” Director of Club Operations Melissa McCormack said. “Honestly, this is the weirdest thing that’s happened here.”

The marshal picked up the shark, placed it in the back of his golf cart and drove it back to the clubhouse. There, cart attendant Bryan Stizer, a San Juan Capistrano resident, briefly placed the shark into a bucket filled with water and a bit of salt, before clocking out on his break to drive the shark out to Baby Beach in Dana Point, where it was released back into the ocean.

McCormack believes the shark was picked out of the water by a predatory bird and was dropped onto the course, which is less than 4 miles away from the Pacific Ocean. The shark was found bleeding from puncture wounds near its dorsal fin.

Sharks falling from the sky. Yep, this appears to be it for us, folks. And for what it's worth, I think sharks falling from the sky would be a pretty spectacular way for us all to go down. It's probably how God wanted it all along.

And could you imagine the reaction of this course marshal when he saw a freaking shark rolling around on the 12th tee box? No doubt he soon had to change his shorts. Two feet or 35 feet, a shark's a shark, and last I heard these things don't usually find themselves hanging out on golf courses.

Oh, and this is reason No. 3,563 why I'll just stick to Golden Tee when it comes to golf.

Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins is one of the most talented wide receivers in college football.

The 6'1", 200-pound sophomore was even an AP first-team All-American last season, becoming just the fourth true freshman to ever do so. Rotoworld currently has Watkins as the No. 2 NFL Draft prospect in the entire sophomore class, only behind Jadeveon Clowney, the South Carolina defensive end BEAST.

However, it's been a rough 2012 for Watkins. In May, he was arrested for marijuana possession, and possession of two pills he didn't have a prescription for. Clemson went on to suspend the wide receiver for the first two games of the 2012 season. Additionally, he missed a game against Boston College due to injury,  and was benched for the beginning of Thursday night's game against Wake Forest for being late to a team meeting.

But, once Watkins got into the Tigers' game against Wake Forest, he freaking dominated. Watkins reeled in eight catches for 202 yards, with his most incredible play being this 61-yard touchdown reception:

Great catch, and even better work after the catch. His ridiculous skills on full display.

Dear God. Those are the uniforms for the Carol City Chiefs, a high school in Delray Beach, Florida (a nice beach town next to Boca Raton).

SB Nation's Bill Hanstock summarized these uniforms well:

While most "Native American"-themed sports teams generally try to stay away from offensive iconography, Carol City has instead chosen to push the pedal to the floor and smash their football team headlong into the "INDIANS, EVERYBODY!" brick wall.

It's not just that their helmets have become fabulous orange-and-grey headdresses. It's not even that THERE IS AN AMERICAN INDIAN CHIEF ON THEIR CROTCHES, OH DEAR, SWEET LORD. No, it is the combination of ALL of these elements with one of the worst color schemes possible, and to top it all off, "digital"-style team name and numbers on the jerseys, like the only free font available on the website they were browsing was "Tamagotchi."

adidas released the fifth episode of their awesome video documentary series, 'The Return of D-Rose', which is about Derrick Rose's recovery from a torn ACL.

The episode is titled 'Drive', and adidas adds, " 'Drive' is inspired by Derrick’s motivation that fuels his recovery – to be a better person and make his family and city proud by winning championships."

Here's the video, which even has some footage of the Chicago Bulls' superstar point guard shooting and dribbling around at the gym:

And here's the transcript:

Derrick Rose

Going through what I went through as a kid all I’m trying to do now is just trying to better myself as a person.

I came a long way where in my neighborhood you wasn't really trying to better yourself you just trying to survive.

When I was hoopin’ I didn’t think about nothing else but winning the game. Whatever I had going on at the crib or any problems I had that was my leeway.

When I was growing up my thing was just changing my mom's lifestyle. She's my mom, my father; I can talk to her about anything. She's like my friend. Our relationship is definitely strong.

Its family first no matter what’s going on, the people that’s going to be with you til’ the end is your family. From looking at me you will never know what I went through because I don’t want you to know. As bad as it was I got through it and that’s why I am the person I am today.

Warning: This video contains plenty of NSFW language (and that's what makes it so fun!):

First things first: "Look at me, Mr. Fucking Howdy Doody!" has to be one of the greatest things you've ever heard one coach yell at another coach, right?

Anyway, that video took place after the Falcons' 28-27 victory over the Cowboys on Saturday . The reason Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen was so furious with Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun, is because he thought that Air Force faked an injury before a play that became the Falcons' game-winning touchdown.

Here's more, from CBS Sports:

Christensen later questioned whether Dietz was injured, noting the quarterback walked about 20 yards before taking a knee near the Falcons sideline. He said the several minutes that trainers attended to Dietz gave Air Force time to strategize the next play.

"There was nothing wrong with that player except that his helmet came off," Christensen said. "And I have a real problem with that."

About eight minutes remained in the game, and the Falcons had all three timeouts remaining.

Before Pearson entered, the referee announced that Dietz, by rule, had to leave the game because his helmet came off.

"In this game we're supposed to be ethical and that's not ethical," Christensen said. "I don't know what they teach at Air Force, but I'm not going to teach that to my kids. I want my guys to get off the field when they're hurt, and we don't want to stop the game."

Next year's battle between these Mountain West teams already has quite a fun storyline set up.

NBC Sports:

A Washington state senior hit a 67-yard field goal to tie the mark for the second-longest field goal in a high school game.

Central Valley High's Austin Rehkow drilled the kick, with distance to spare, to tie a game with Shadle Park High at 55 as regulation expired Thursday night. Central Valley, in the Spokane suburbs, went on to beat Shadle Park 62-55 in overtime.

Rehkow's field goal set a Washington state record. The previous mark was 62 yards set in 1929.

According to The National Federation of High Schools Record Book, Rehkow's kick tied the mark for the second-longest high school field goal. The record is 68 yards, set by Dirk Borgognone of Reno, Nev., in 1985.

The NFL record is 63 yards.

Here's video of the incredible kick:

Rehkow came into the game making just 7 of 14 field goals (for those of you non-math majors, that's 50%), but had 2 over 50 yards. He apparently received a "partial scholarship" from Eastern Washington earlier in the week.

Even though his accuracy hasn't been very impressive over the season (and for all we know, part of that may be due to bad snaps/holds at the high school level), you'd have to think he'll get more interest from colleges after that insane, clutch kick. If nothing else, with that leg, he can just kick touchbacks over and over as a kickoff specialist, and be the field goal kicker on long-distance attempts.

As we know more than anybody at The Thigh, a special leg should never go to waste.

If you're a big fan of any professional sports team, you know how articles on official team websites go: Just straight-up news with very little analysis or opinions; key stats and facts in a way to present the team in a positive light.

What you don't see (well, until today, anyway), is an article like the one today from the San Diego Chargers' Director of Public Relations, Bill Johnston. It's directed at Chargers fans, and is titled 'Take a Chill Pill', which immediately makes things awkward.

And things then get even more awkward in the article's first sentence:

What’s with you people?
What's with you people, Chargers fans?

Yeah... that's really going to go over well with the Chargers' fan base.

Johnston continues:

Yes, Monday night’s loss was bad. Horrible. Embarrassing.
Ok…enough already. No mas. I get it.
Now get over it. It was a loss. One loss.
Listening to some of you out there, you’d think Monday night was “win or go home” and the Chargers are now packing their bags.
Now get over that nationally-televised humiliating chokejob against your biggest AFC West title competitors, Chargers fans. Bill something or other from the Chargers' PR department says so.

Oh, but there's more:

Another wrote, “Bye, bye Chargers. Put a fork in them.”
Sometimes I think Twitter was invented to give people a chance to puff out their chests and talk big, saying things they never would say to someone’s face.
And talk radio … don’t get me started. The old adage your mom used to preach – “If you don’t have anything good say, don’t say anything” – seems to have evolved to “if you don’t have anything good to say, call sports talk radio.”

It (uncomfortably) goes on, and on. And the comments from fans below the article are exactly as you'd expect them to be.

Yikes.

I've posted a bunch of parkour videos on here over the years, always of people failing miserably, of course. Because why would I have any interest in supporting an activity that simply involves a bunch of dickheads climbing and jumping around the neighborhood like, well, dickheads?

And then I came across this video today which I hope all of the parkourers (I hope I got that wrong) see themselves. Not only do we get a nice reminder of how completely lame parkour is, but we see how you can easily destroy the hell out of yourself while doing it.

I can see the reactions now: "But that's why parkour is so cool, bro. It's extreme, a challenge, an amazing adrenaline rush."

No, trying to jump building to building is not cool, it's goddamn idiotic. And ultimately, you'll end up paying the price for it, just like this guy did (He's not dead, but he's certainly not doing well either, as the video will explain at the end):

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Brandon Gibson made a spectacular one-handed reception in the final minute of the Rams' game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The play helped give the Rams a chance to attempt a game-tying field goal... but the attempt would be from 65 yards away, and rookie Greg Zuerlein (quite understandably) missed the kick.

Anyway, here's Gibson's awesome grab:

In total, Gibson had 7 receptions for 91 yards in the game. With Danny Amendola out, the Rams were looking for a receiver to step up in his absence, and it appears that Gibson may be that guy. He's worth monitoring as a fantasy football waiver wire option, especially in PPR leagues.

Wednesday's MLB postseason action was absolutely awesome, and it's been every bit as good through the first two games Thursday.

In the first game of the day, we saw NL MVP candidate Buster Posey hit a grand slam to cap off a six-run fifth inning, and give the Giants a 6-0 lead. The Reds came right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, and had chance after chance to tie the game (or even win it) late. However, the Giants were able to hang on for a 6-4 victory, and win the series in five games, after trailing 2-0 in the series.

And in the afternoon game between the Cardinals and Nationals, the score was 1-1 in the ninth, until the Nationals' Jayson Werth did this on the 13th pitch of his at-bat:

After signing a seven-year, $126-million deal with the Nationals before the 2011 season, Werth had just a .718 OPS in 2011, and only played in 81 games in 2012 (but did put up a rock-solid .300/.387/.440/.827 line). But, if the Nationals now go on to win game five, Werth's game four winner will quiet those complaints about his contract... for at least a while.
